A Vegan Activist Has Been Refused A Passport Because She’s Too “Annoying”

You know that old cliché that a vegan isn’t truly a vegan unless they tell you that they’re a vegan at least five time in one sentence? It’s all good fun but, largely, isn’t true.

Sure, vegans are real people too but, come on, who here doesn’t look at one eating their “salad” and think ‘come on, buddy. Who are you fooling?’

With that in mind, Nancy Holten, 42, was born in the Netherlands and moved to Switzerland. She speaks fluent Swiss German and has children with Swiss nationality. She’s also a vegan activist which, apparently, is the detriment to her downfall.

The locals are getting angry at her since she keeps complaining about local traditions of putting bells around cows’ necks and piglet racing, even going as far as conducting interviews with the local press. Speaking to them she’s said:

The sound that cow bells make is a hundred decibel. It is comparable to a pneumatic drill. We also would not want such a thing hanging close to our ears?” she reportedly told the media.

The animals carry around five kilograms around their neck. It causes friction and burns to their skin,

In Switzerland, the townsfolk have the power to accept or reject someone’s application to a Swiss passport via a vote. When Ms Holten first voted, her application was rejected with 144 out of 206 residents voting against her.

I think I was too strident and spoke my mind too often” she told The Local, adding that she did not wish to offend anyone of disrespect any traditions.

Tanja Suter, the local Swiss People’s Party president, says Ms Holten has a “big mouth” and that residents didn’t want her to have citizenship since “she annoys us and doesn’t respect our traditions”.

All of the legal requirements have been met to earn such a treasure, alas, she annoys the locals, basically. What a world.

Ms Holten’s second request was rejected in November last year but has now been takent to the cantonal government in Aargau. It may get approved there…
